Shield gets growl of approval

Real grizzly bears might have been frightened by all the growling at Abbotsford School yesterday when members of the Green Island Rugby Football Club dropped in for a visit.

The school was visited by Jason Bezett and Robert Bain, of the Green Island Rugby Football Club, along with the New Zealand rugby club of the year shield.

Forty-eight children at the school, who also played for the club, were raising their claws in hope to get a look at the shield.

Pupil and Green Island Rugby Football Club player Ollie Moore, 11, said it was special.

"Personally, I really love it.

"I think it's really cool to win it."

It was special to be part of the club winning the award, he said.

His favourite player in the team was hooker Heath MacEwan.

Club president Mr Bain said taking the shield to the school was part of paying the community back for their support.

"At the end of the day we do it for them, they’re the next generation coming through.

"We're lucky enough to have all these people at different schools around the area and even the wider schools around the area that all go to Green Island and support the Grizzlies."

Getting the shield was a once in a lifetime moment, Mr Bain said.

It would continue to be shown around the community this week and visit other businesses and club members.

Green Island Rugby Football Club was awarded the shield after being named club of the year at the New Zealand Rugby Awards last week.

This year, the Grizzlies won their first Dunedin premier club title in 46 years.
