Teargas lost by police in Dunedin remains unaccounted for.
A black bag containing an aluminium tear-gas canister and five tear-gas cartridges was lost by members of the armed offenders squad on August 22.
They were called to an incident in Mosgiel, and the bag was lost between St Andrew St and the Southern Motorway.
Police searches for the bag were unsuccessful, and the public was asked to return it to the central Dunedin station if found.
Dunedin Clutha area commander Inspector Greg Sparrow said the bag's contents should not be tampered with.
''Our main concern is that someone finds the canister or the gas cartridges and doesn't know what's in them and tampers with them,'' he said.
A police spokeswoman said yesterday the bag, tear-gas canister and cartridges had not been located.
Police launched an internal investigation to determine how the equipment was lost, and to ensure it did not happen again, Insp Sparrow said.
Anyone with information about the lost items was asked to call Dunedin police on (03) 471-4800 or supply information anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
