The railcar was at the station for about 30 minutes so Taieri Gorge Railway staff could look at it before it takes part in a train festival at Dunedin and Middlemarch during Labour Weekend.
The 1939 railcar, which has a driving compartment at each end, was one of several used regularly on the Taieri Gorge line between 1956 and 1976.
It is one of four restored railcars left in New Zealand and one of only two which still run.
The 48-seater arrived in Dunedin from its home at the Ferrymead historic park in Christchurch on Saturday.
Taieri Gorge operations manager Grant Craig said the railcar would travel to Pukerangi today, with some of the original New Zealand Railways staff who used to ride the railcars on board.
It would be stationed at Middlemarch for runs between Middlemarch and Pukerangi during the train festival.
