A Dunedin organisation has been given funding to help improve the quality of physical education for young people.
Sixteen organisations around the country have been awarded funding by the Ministry for Sport and Recreation to increase opportunities for young people with disabilities in sport and recreation.
Minister Grant Robertson said the $3.6million fund aimed to improve the range and quality of physical activity on offer for disabled young people.
The organisations were chosen from a total of 68applications.
Sport Otago general manager, programmes Owen Booth said the money would help overcome the barriers disabled children faced when it came to physical activity.
The money would allow it to hire a facilitator who would work directly with a group of schools to ensure equal opportunity for play.
It would help to get disabled children active instead of just learning inside the classroom.
The funding allowed for three years of work, in which time Sport Otago would develop a framework and train individuals to continue the work in the future, Mr Booth said.
"We don’t just want to be delivering programmes for able-bodied people."
The exact amount awarded was still being negotiated, but Sport Otago was working to start the programme on July 1, he said.
