Special Rigs for Special Kids takes children with special needs for a journey around Dunedin in large trucks before ending with a barbecue and some family fun.
The annual event was set to take place this Sunday,
but has been rescheduled to October 31.
Organiser Greg Inch said hitting that date was the only chance it had.
There was a small period of availability when trucks were not in high demand, due to seasonal developments, such as milking.
It was already difficult to reorganise for late October and there was simply no chance of it going ahead if they had to reschedule again, he said.
Usually about 200 truckers and more than 300 children would take part.
He was working to make sure there would be enough trucks available at the rescheduled date so no child was left behind.
The event was cancelled last year.
"This would have been our 30th year, but now we’re struggling to make it the 29th."
The cancellation last year was "a real shock," he said, and was much more difficult to handle than he expected.
"I just thought ‘I’ve been putting this together for 28 years, now I’ve got to figure out how to pull it apart."’
Both the children and the truckers looked forward to the event and he was dreading the idea that it might be cancelled again.
"Some of the kids look forward to it more than Christmas."
It was a "huge" event, involving hundreds of people, and would not be able to go ahead unless the country was in Alert Level 1, he said.
