SPCA Otago is set to open its first op-shop in Dunedin.
Executive officer Sophie McSkimming said the charity would be opening an op-shop at 17 North Rd in Northeast Valley, in the premises occupied by the Salvation Army Family Store before it moved to Great King St.
"We are really excited,'' Ms McSkimming said.
The shop interior would be painted and some carpet was being laid next week for an expected opening on January 25.
The shop would sell second-hand clothing, books and bric-a-brac.
People with goods to give could bring them to the Opoho shelter.
The funds generated by selling the goods would directly benefit the animals in the care of SPCA Otago, Ms McSkimming said.
"We get no government funding, so we have to look at different revenue streams and op-shops are obviously it at the moment.''
SPCA Otago had an op-shop in Alexandra and the shop's turnover had doubled since it shifted premises to the more central Limerick St about six months ago.
"It's really, really good.''
The Alexandra success had SPCA Otago searching for the right shop in Dunedin.
The North Rd shop was perfect because it was the right size and had an understanding landlord.
"It's going to be a good place to start and now it's time.''
