A Dunedin resident woken by a smoke alarm as a wall in their house burned this morning says the device saved them from ''a pretty nasty incident''.
A Fire Service spokesperson said crews from Lookout Point and Roslyn were called to a house fire in Scotland Tce, Green Island about 3am.
On arrival they found the fire had burnt a hole in a wall and had spread inside the wall cavity.
The wall was near an open fire, which had burnt out.
It was unclear how the wall had caught fire.
A person sleeping inside the house was woken by a smoke alarm.
''A smoke alarm saved us from having a pretty nasty incident, which is a great result."
