About 300 children were cheered on by spectators as they ploughed through pools of mud at the annual event.
Portobello Community Incorporated convener Lyn Pope said about 500 competitors, some dressed in wetsuits and goggles, traversed the Portobello Domain for the sixth year.
Entrants were treated to a bath in a slime pit, made from 20 boxes of Lux soap flakes, followed by a waterslide run by the Portobello Volunteer Fire Brigade after the muddy obstacle course.
Money raised at the event would be given to Portobello Community Incorporated, Mrs Pope said.
