A digital sign advises drivers Upper Junction Rd, near Sawyers Bay, is closed.

A Dunedin City Council spokesman said the road had been closed between 140 and 192 Upper Junction Rd since heavy rain fell at the start of the month.

The rain caused a large slip which brought down a tree and other material, the spokesman said.

The council had hoped to clear the slip last week, but more material had since made its way down the slip, "so we’re continuing to work in the area", he said.

The road remains closed to "through traffic", but residents’ access was being maintained either side of the slip.

"We now expect to have the slip clear and the road reopened by Friday afternoon. We’re keeping residents updated in the meantime," the spokesman said.
