The sirens for the Mosgiel Community Food Bank annual Christmas food bank drive will sound again next month, and organisers are hopeful of the same generosity shown by the community last year.

Food bank co-ordinator Michelle Kerr said a door-to-door collection would start at 6pm on December 9.

Residents should listen for the sirens to bring food out to collectors in their street.

Emergency vehicles and Lions club members and volunteers will collect donated food items f in Mosgiel, East Taieri, Kinmont, Allanton, Outram, Brighton, Green Island, Abbotsford, Sunnyvale and Fairfield.

The food bank wanted long-life staples, such as baked beans, spaghetti, canned tomatoes, fruit and pasta, milo, coffee, tea, biscuits, soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, sugar, flour and baking powder.

''We are after anything and everything.''

Mrs Kerr said there would also be a drop-off point at PGG Wrightson Outram for residents in outlying areas such as Henley, Berwick, Lee Stream and Middlemarch.

And she is working on having a trolley for donations at Mosgiel Library for donations.

Last year, 260 cartons of food were collected and a carton held about 60 cans.

''The community is very generous - it is absolutely amazing.''

The food bank caters to the greater Taieri area and had a client base of 320 households. On average it distributes about $60,000 of food parcels each year.

Demand for food parcels was ''constant and increasing''.

Of the 61 food parcels the food bank gave out last month, 19 parcels were to new clients.

A food parcel for a family of four contains about $150 of food, including fruit and vegetables.

''Mosgiel residents keep us filled up with fruit, vegetables and eggs. I have people that just have vegetables in their garden for us. The generosity is amazing.''
