Singers gather accolades and trophies

The Dame Malvina Major Foundation Dunedin Aria Competition winners soprano Natasha Wilson (left) and tenor Filipe Manu, who  competed  at Marama Hall last night.

Mr Manu, of Auckland, received $5000 from the foundation and the Celebration of a Century Cup.

The 23-year-old tenor said he was "really happy" with the win.

"It was a lot of hard work."

He needed to be in Auckland to rehearse for an opera today and planned to travel to New York and London for auditions later this year —  "To cast my net out and see what I get back."

Runner-up Ms Wilson (22), of Auckland, received the Val Braumann Award of $2000 and the Chambers Family Tray.

Soprano Madison Nonoa (23), of Hamilton,  was third, and received the Hadley & Robinson Award of $1000.

Judges Choice Award winner soprano Laura Loach (28), of Timaru, received the Queen Rose Retirement Home Award of $250 and the Gaelic Society Trophy.

The audience of about 130  heard  the  10 finalists sing 20 arias.
