A few mature male actors impressed a Shortland Street casting director seeking fresh talent in Dunedin yesterday.

Andrea Kelland said most "elderly gentlemen" in Auckland, where the show is filmed, had already "had a turn" so she was glad to see some new faces.

It was the first time she had been in Dunedin for more than 20 years, after being invited by McDaniel and Power acting and profile management, and co-owner Barbara Power hoped to make it an annual event.

Ms Kelland assessed 14 actors yesterday and will meet another 20 today.

Each actor was given a script and character breakdown, then asked to perform, trying to provide her with what she was looking for: the ability to "transition".

"What we are looking for is a character that can be caring and sharing and also have a fiery temper," she said.

Having seen a "great variety" of actors, including one young woman who "blew her socks off", Ms Kelland said the trip was "really worthwhile".

Selected audition tapes would be kept on file and used when a new character was being cast, she said.

Ms Power described the visit as "invaluable".
