Brighton residents have been given a week to discuss the alternative proposed sites for a 2degrees cellphone tower in Scroggs Hill Rd.

But residents who opposed the original Scroggs Hill Rd site said yesterday's proposal was insulting.

Protester Tracy Grubb said she was ''shellshocked and distressed'' by the three new proposed sites, which were all closer to her home in Scroggs Hill Rd.

''My heart is racing. I can't believe it; this is a joke. It's a slap in the face.''

Protester Michele Neuman said she was insulted by the proposal.

''2degrees haven't listened to the community. It has just shifted the problem by 10m.''

''Is that it?'' protester Amy Abbott said of the proposal.

Protester Brent Foster said the rosters to protest at the original site were full with residents' names.

''The resolve is still there.''

2degrees corporate affairs director Matthew Bollard said he had a teleconference with protester Daryl Hanna, Saddle Hill Community Board members Keith McFadyen and Dunedin city councillor Colin Weatherall yesterday.

For improved mobile phone coverage in Ocean View and Brighton, the tower had to be installed in Scroggs Hill Rd, he said.

The new site proposed near the Scroggs Hill and Seaview Rd intersection might be a problem, as it could be difficult to install the tower because of powerlines.

''We're not absolutely sure where we'd fit it, but we'd have to work with Delta.''

The other two sites in Scroggs Hill Rd were road reserve.

Moving the tower closer to more Scroggs Hill Rd homes would be unpopular with some residents, but the vista would be ''less impacted''.

2degrees still regarded the original proposed site as the best option, Mr Bollard said.

''Every option has its pluses and minuses,'' he said.

He asked Mr McFadyen and Cr Weatherall to consult the community and contact 2degrees early next week with feedback.

Mr Hanna said he met about 35 residents last night and the new 2degrees proposal was unanimously rejected.

If necessary, protesters would camp on the three new sites, he said.

''This is an absolute insult ... it has made us more determined to stand our ground.''
