Two Dunedin pedestrians who say they were almost hit by a driver who then drove off say it is time for people to slow down and be careful.

Scaffolder Marc Calvo, of Dunedin, said he was crossing Young St, heading north with his partner Nadia Clarke when a car came around the corner from Prince Albert Rd, nearly hitting them.

The incident happened about 4.15pm on Thursday.

Mr Calvo confronted the driver about the near miss and received a torrent of abuse as a response.

He wanted an apology from the driver and for them to slow down and look before they made turns in the future.

There could have been old people or children who may have been hit, Mr Calvo said.

Police attended the scene and he was hopeful that the driver would be located.

The car was a black Toyota hatchback, driven by a man wearing high-vis work gear.

A police spokeswoman said inquiries were ongoing.
