Tiakaiwa Kingi, 24, of Dunedin, cools down at Outram Glen as temperatures topped 30°C on the Taieri at 3pm yesterday, as displayed on the Mosgiel clock (below).

While Mosgiel reached 30.4°C, it was nowhere near hot enough to break the MetService December temperature record of 33.1°C, set on December 21, 2015.

But a MetService spokesman said there was plenty of time over summer to match or break the record.

Alexandra and Oamaru also broke the barrier with 30.5°C and 30.0°C, respectively. Dunedin got close, at 28.8°C
