Motorists attempting to cross the Andersons Bay causeway had to negotiate their way around the juvenile seal which was napping in the sun.
A police spokeswoman said police were alerted to the mischievous seal by a member of the public about 8.30am.
''The caller described the animal as fat, with big brown eyes; clothing nil,'' the spokeswoman said.
Police guided traffic around Dale while a Department of Conservation staff member moved him.
Department of Conservation ranger Jim Fyfe said no concrete plans to move the seal to a new home had been made.
If he was moved, Brighton could be an ideal location.
However, there was no guarantee he would not enter inner city waters again, Mr Fyfe said.
