Waldronville School was reduced to rubble yesterday when diggers levelled the 50-year-old school buildings.

The former Waldronville Playcentre, which was also on the property, was demolished earlier this week to make way for a large residential subdivision.

The school was officially closed in April 2010 after its rolls had continued to decline, and the playcentre closed midway through last year.

The 2.02ha property included both the former school at 5A Vulcan Rd and the early childhood centre at 319 Brighton Rd, which had a combined capital value of $1,165,000.

It was placed on the open market earlier this year after it was offered to Ngai Tahu by the Ministry of Education and turned down.

At the time, Colliers International commercial/industrial sales and leasing Dunedin manager Dean Collins described the property as ''a development opportunity not to be missed''.

Mr Collins declined to reveal who now owned the property or the purchase price but said it was certain to be subdivided into residential property.

Former Waldronville Playcentre volunteer teacher Vi Cook said she was sad to see the buildings demolished.

''It's a large piece of the town's history gone.

''But it makes sense to turn it into residential property. It will be nice to have the property used again.

''The irony is, they will probably need to build another school or early childhood centre to accommodate the population growth,'' she said.
