Big reading books are now in abundance at Brighton's Big Rock Primary school, thanks to a big gift from Dunedin East Rotary.

Principal David Grant was thrilled to receive $7000 worth of reading resources from the club this week.

"They are the sort of books we would love to buy but we would only buy one [due to a limited budget]," he said.

The school also received headphones and electronic books to use with interactive boards in the classroom.

Club member Bruce Leadbetter said Big Rock was chosen because it was a new school and conversations with parents revealed the enthusiasm the community had for it.

"[It was] an opportunity to give them the boot along when they are a new school," he said.

He also valued the importance of reading and understood new technology helped grab the attention of young minds.

Grants from the Chenery Memorial Trust and the Lois Dalley Charitable Trust helped get the project off the ground.

Tomahawk, Corstorphine and Forbury schools also received $1000 worth of books from the club as part of a separate project organised by Graham Batts.
