The Primary Science Teacher Fellowship Programme works to stimulate positive attitudes towards science among both teachers and children.
Kaikorai School teacher Megan Deans and Tahuna Normal Intermediate teacher Roddy Scoles, both of Dunedin, are among the 35 primary teachers who have been awarded the 2010 fellowships.
They will spend the first two terms of next year with a host organisation.
The programme is run by the Royal Society of New Zealand, and funded by the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology.
Royal Society education adviser Joanna Leaman said science was not a high priority in primary schools with an average of just one hour per week taught.
"We want to help address this deficiency and get teachers excited about teaching science. Our aim is to develop a community of science educators who will take a leadership role in science in their schools."
