Scholar praises Otago study

A Malaysia-based academic is crediting her time at the University of Otago as the reason for being chosen as a Fulbright Scholar.

Dr Catheryn Khoo-Lattimore was given a Fulbright Scholar award - worth about $US20,000 - to carry out six months of research at the University of Florida and she credited her time studying towards a PhD at Otago University's School of Business for getting the award.

''The training at Otago was so good. I never thought of myself as a researcher, but Otago gave me all that training and I absolutely loved it,'' Dr Khoo-Lattimore, who is now employed as a teacher at Taylor's University in Malaysia, said.

Dr Khoo-Lattimore, who has been in Dunedin for the last few months to deliver her baby, was thankful for the support she received while at Otago University.

''I had a lot of support all round, from the Department of Marketing and also from the School of Business.''

Her research would be in the same area as her PhD, which was on consumer behaviour.

''I am going to look at consumer behaviour within the context of female travel ... and what the hospitality industry and the tourism industry can do better for females travelling on their own.''

She would be taking up the position in Florida next month and was looking forward to it.

''In Malaysia I don't get a lot of time off to do research. It's pretty much a lot of teaching, so I am really looking forward to this.''
