Persistent overnight rain has caused landslides, rising rivers and flooded roads across Coastal Otago.

Summary

Landslides and flooding cause evacuations at Long Beach, Berwick, Henley and Mosgiel.

State Highway 1 closed south of Milton, at Karitane and north of Oamaru.

Many roads are closed due to widespread surface flooding in and around Milton, Mosgiel, the Taieri Plain, Dunedin and Oamaru.

Flood warning in place for the Taieri River at Outram which is continuing to rise. The Taieri is expected to have high flows for several days.

Flood warnings also remain active for the Kakanui, Waitahuna and Shag Rivers which are continuing to rise.

Flows in the Shag are expected to cause some surface flooding in low lying coastal areas.

River flows are receding in the Silver Stream, Water of Leith, and the Waikouaiti and Tokomairiro Rivers.
