The venue was packed, as school pupils made speeches and various groups sang and danced.
Samoan Advisory Council Dunedin chairman Afamasaga Taele-Pavihi said the event acknowledged the 60th anniversary of Samoan independence, but it also came on the heels of Samoan Language Week and it was the first independence celebration since last year’s change of government.
There were 11 performances before lunch, including from church groups.
Mr Taele-Pavihi said the occasion presented a chance for young people to perform in front of family and extended family.
Many were born in New Zealand and the gathering provided an opportunity for them to embrace aspects of their culture and enjoy themselves.
Dunedin Mayor Aaron Hawkins and Taieri MP Ingrid Leary were two of the guests.
