A plethora of protrusions is expected to help protect pedestrians from the most unpredictable motorists in central Dunedin.
Road workers are extending footpaths and pedestrian refuges at 13 sites as part of a $280,000 safety improvement programme.
Splitter islands are also being installed on some roads to slow traffic and to allow pedestrians to cross one lane at a time, and a pedestrian crossing is being installed where Main South Rd passes through the Green Island shopping centre.
Council roading policy engineer Pieter Besuijen yesterday said the changes should make it easier for walkers and cyclists to judge traffic flow.
They should also help drivers better see pedestrians before they stepped into the road.
The work was being carried out by Fulton Hogan.
Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians were urged to take care at each site.
The sites are: Anzac Ave-Albany St; Filleul St-Moray Pl; Great King St-Moray Pl; Stone St-Kenmure Rd; Richardson St-Prince Albert Rd; Totara St-Wanaka St; Main South Rd-Church St; Thorn St-Playfair St; Old Brighton Rd-Sickels St; Smith St-York Pl; Cargill St-Filleul St; Burlington St-Moray Pl.
