Contractors say a roading project near Portobello could be completed three months ahead of schedule.

Downer EDI works project manager Khris Dore said widening and sealing about 1.6km of Harington Point Rd between Tiley St and Weir Rd, near Portobello, could be completed by the end of July.

A new section of sea wall was completed earlier than anticipated, which allowed roading work to progress ahead of schedule, Mr Dore said.

The wall resembled historic stone sea walls, some sections of which were built by prisoners in the late 19th century.

Work hand-placing an estimated 300,000 stones in the 4600sq m wall began in February, he said.

"The materials were used for aesthetic reasons. It's closer to the historical harbour sea wall . . . I think it was money well spent for the city."

Dunedin City Council roading manager Mike Costelloe said work on the $2.8 million project, and another $1.1 million project at Company Bay (being completed by Fulton Hogan Ltd), was due to be completed by October.

Roads had been widened from about 6m to about 10m to provide cycling and pedestrian access and improve traffic safety, he said.

Mr Costelloe said contracts to complete upgrades between Poo Corner and Pipikaretu Rd (Otakou) and Macandrew Bay to Company Bay would be offered for tender in the next two months.

Upgrades would also be carried out at Burns Point, near the Vauxhall Yacht Club, and Rosehill to Macandrew Bay.

The roading work, comprising seven projects, would cost about $12 million and is due for completion by 2013.
