Mosgiel police are warning residents to remain vigilant as a dangerous criminal with a long history of dishonesty offending remains on the loose.

Robert Paul Laxon is wanted on two warrants for failing to appear in court earlier this year, related to burglary charges.

Sergeant Kevin Davidson, of Mosgiel, said police were confident Laxon was in the Mosgiel area and had associates in the township.

''There have been a number of alleged sightings and we have followed each of those up, but have been so far unlucky in finding him,'' he said.

''He's always stayed around this area. His associates are here.''

Several burglaries led police to believe he might be active in the area and residents should take precautions.

''He has got a history of burglary, so all residents should ensure all their property is safely tucked away and nothing left lying around and when you leave home make sure everything is locked up,'' Sgt Davidson said.

''There have been a number of offences that have occurred since he's been on the run, but we can't establish a link between him and them at this point.''

Laxon was considered dangerous and had associations with the Notorious Mongrel Mob, although it was unclear whether he was a patched member.

Police believed Laxon could be mobile and were open-minded about what areas of Mosgiel he could frequent.

''We are not discounting any address whatsoever,'' Sgt Davidson said.

''We are not discounting any possibility.

''He has access to associates with vehicles so he could be mobile. He could be anywhere.''

Anyone who believed they had seen Laxon should call 111 immediately and not approach him, he said.

''We haven't got the man, so anything we can do to change that situation would be good.''

Mosgiel police (03) 489-3534, Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
