Power lines that once distributed electricity from Dunedin to the Otago Peninsula have been taken down and reeled in.

Three redundant lines spanned 445m between two cliff-top poles across the Andersons Bay Inlet.

The lines were no longer in use because other power distribution options had been built or became available, an Aurora Energy spokeswoman said.

Yesterday’s operation to remove them was a carefully planned logistical exercise, she said.

Just under a ton of conductor line installed in about the 1930s was removed.

Delta contractors released the cables from one side and lowered them into the water, then used a cable truck to wind them in on the Bayfield Park side of the inlet.

The cliff-top poles will remain.
