Rape accused remanded

A man charged with kidnapping and raping a woman and kidnapping a child at a Liberton house last month was further remanded in custody when he appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday.

Judge Mary O'Dwyer remanded the man to May 11 after counsel Anne Stevens said that was an agreed date for depositions.

The 24-year-old man faces 10 charges, including kidnapping the woman between January 9 and 17, kidnapping a child with intent to hold him for ransom, raping and sexually violating the woman, intentionally causing the woman grievous bodily harm and intentionally injuring two other people.

Interim suppression of the man's name remains in place, in keeping with the complainant's wishes.
