This rain is such a drag

Twins Devin (left) and Karli Colston (8), of Mosgiel, shelter from the storm in a 1954 Chevrolet pick-up truck minutes before the Otago Sports Car Club's quarter mile (400m) sprint was cancelled yesterday.

A field of 33 cars, including a T-Bucket Ford, Subaru Impreza, Honda CR-X, Camaro, Corvette, Mitsubishi Evo and even a Volkswagen Beetle, lined up for the annual drag race in Dukes Rd.

But it was all torque and no action as heavy rain forced organisers to cancel the event within minutes of the scheduled 6pm start.

"It's the first time we've had to cancel it in four years, so it's a bit of a shame," club president Chris Adams said.

"We were all ready to go when the rain came," he said ruefully.

"But it just gets too dangerous in the wet."

The next Otago Sports Car Club event is the Three Mile hill climb, on March 18.
