Much of the main south line has been reopened to rail services after clearance of slips relating to last week’s sustained rain.
More of the line north of Dunedin, from Sawyers Bay to Merton, was reopened yesterday.
The line south of Dunedin to Balclutha was also restored to operation.
The only part of the main south line still closed was between Merton and Oamaru, KiwiRail South Island infrastructure manager Gary Ikin said last night.
"This includes where our teams are still making repairs in the Shag Point area, which was damaged by a number of substantial slips on to and underneath the rail line," he said.
"We are also working on a slip in the Tumai area."
