Radio stalwart signing off for the last time

Today is Owen Rooney’s final day at Radio Dunedin.

At noon, the 65-year-old will be stepping away from the microphone to enjoy his retirement after 16 years at the station.

Mr Rooney ran the weekday morning show from 6am to noon.

He began his radio career at Radio Scenicland in Greymouth in 1980, which was part of Radio New Zealand, he said.

He worked at Radio New Zealand fulltime until 1996.

He left to become an owner driver for EnviroWaste but continued to work part time in radio throughout.

In 2006, he returned to full time work, this time for Radio Dunedin.

He said he had interviewed countless interesting figures over the years, but he would miss speaking to the regular contributors such as local politicians the most.

He was sad to be leaving radio, but said he could not dwell on it as at the end of the day it was his decision.

"I’m going to be leaving something that’s been part of my life for a long time."

He had been passionate about radio throughout his life and had enjoyed the time he spent on air.

"It gets into your blood after a while and that’s about it

"I’ve done it for 41 years so it’s time to move on."

Although he was ready to retire, he said he had no plans set in stone, but had time to figure it out.
