The MPs are invited and so are you to a weekly political forum which asks the hard and quirky questions of politicians before the general election.

Tomorrow, former University of Otago politics student turned Labour MP David Cunliffe will be asked questions by lecturers, students and the public as part of a weekly forum, Vote Chat.

Previous participants include Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei, National MP Michael Woodhouse, and Labour MP David Parker. Mana Party leader Hone Harawira will be featuring next week.

University of Otago politics lecturer Dr Bryce Edwards said he set up the weekly forum "for campaigming politicians to come and interact with us".

While politicians frequently attended meetings at the university, they were done "on their terms, not ours".

Dr Edwards said Vote Chat centred around a conversation with the politician- conducted by himself or political students - and included questions from the floor and by way of social media with questions posted on a large screen.

"It's a friendly but challenging forum where we give some hard and quirky questions to the campaigning politicians."

Quirky questions included asking where some of the politicians drank when they were students, did they burn any couches, and what lecturers they did not like.

The aim was to interview "interesting politicians regardless of how high up the pecking order they go".

Vote Chat, featuring David Cunliffe, will be held at the University of Otago's Archway 4 tomorrow at noon.
