The school's vegetable garden yesterday was judged in the final of the 2010 Great New Zealand Schools Grow-Off.
Queen's is the only South Island school to make the top five in the national competition.
Principal Julie Anderson said the garden was developed as part of the Maori community action programme Healthy Eating Healthy Action.
"The girls are working on it as part of the horticulture programme.
"They learn about healthy lifestyles and how to grow things and then take them home and eat them," she said.
"They've already used the produce to make salads."
The pupils said the vegetables they grew tasted much better than supermarket produce.
Queen's also maintains an environmental garden and a herb garden.
Tui Products national sales manager Scott McCullough, who is judging the competition, was impressed with the school's entry.
"It's fantastic. There's a huge amount of passion in this garden," he said.
"The grow-off is all about getting students involved. Some students don't even know what the different vegetables are."
The results of the 2010 Great New Zealand Schools Grow-Off will be announced in February.
