A university spokeswoman said proctor Dave Miller had resigned to take a job in the justice sector.
News of his resignation comes as the university has been dealing with the usual spike in disorder during Orientation Week, and after a group of Dunedin women complained harassment in the student quarter had reached breaking point.
The spokeswoman said the resignation was not related to performance issues and the timing would not affect the operations of the proctor's office.
‘‘The proctor's last day of work will be April 27, which gives the opportunity for the recruitment of a replacement to be completed,'' she said.
In a one-line statement, Mr Miller said: ‘‘I have been offered and accepted a fantastic opportunity to work in the justice sector where I came from, and it is with regret that I tendered my resignation to the university.''
Mr Miller started as proctor on October 28, replacing Simon Thompson, who served in the role for 15 years.
