A wandering possum caused an hour-long power outage near Mosgiel.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said officers were called to the vicinity of Paterson Rd in Wingatui after residents heard a loud bang and an engine running about 11.50pm yesterday.

They thought it was a car crash, but when police arrived they discovered that a possum had become caught in live wires.

The sound of an engine was due to a diesel generator being used to keep nearby train signals working.

The possum died in the incident, Snr Sgt Bond said.

A crew from a lines company attended and power in the area was out from about 11.50pm to 12.55am.
