Sergeant Trevor Thomson, of Dunedin, said the householder  returned home to find a broken glass pane in his house in David St in Caversham.

On entering the house he saw a man running down the hall to the back door, about 2.30pm.

A police dog and handler attended but failed to find the offender, he said.
