University of Otago students involved in couch fires will face the wrath of the courts and the proctor, police say.
The Fire Service was called to two fires in North Dunedin early yesterday.
Rubbish was set alight at the intersection of Cumberland St North and Mackenzie St North at 3.43am, and couch set on fire in Brook St at 5.13am.
Senior Sergeant Phil McDouall, of Dunedin, warned those involved that ''we don't condone fire whatsoever''.
''Anyone who lights fires will be referred to the courts and the proctor.''
Last year, police, in consultation with the university, introduced a no-diversion policy for any offence involving a fire.
Earlier this year, the Otago Daily Times reported nuisance fires in the student quarter hit a five-year high last year, with Castle St the area's worst trouble spot.
Last year, the university proctor dealt with 43 students who wilfully set fires, with a further eight students referred for fuelling fires.
