Police target intersection offenders

A large-scale police operation targeting driver behaviour at intersections in Dunedin yesterday resulted in 98 offence notices being issued - a surprising but pleasingly low number, police say.

Constable Karl Hemmingsen said more than 30 police staff worked on the operation, codenamed "Big Red", from 10am until mid-afternoon.

They targeted 15 intersections throughout the city which were statistically the worst for crashes.

Taking into account the number of officers involved in the operation and its length, police were pleasantly surprised by the relatively low number of tickets issued, Const Hemmingsen said.

During the operation, police discovered one person in breach of their bail conditions and another person they were seeking to arrest.

The most tickets were issued in South Dunedin.
