Police, security staff break up Octagon brawl

Police are praising security staff at hotels and a 24-hour convenience store, and Dunedin City Council's safety officers, for their help after a brawl involving about 30 people erupted in the Octagon early yesterday.

Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Dunedin, said police discovered the "rather large" brawl about 4am.

All available units, and the Dunedin police station watchhouse keeper, descended on the Octagon, where they found what appeared to be several groups fighting.

The situation was brought under control, with no reports of injuries.

"We received some really good help from security personnel," Snr Sgt Brown said.

Four males were arrested and will appear in court this week.

An 18-year-old was charged with disorderly behaviour, a 22-year-old with aggravated assault and resisting arrest, and a 20-year-old with obstruction.

A 21-year-old was charged with aggravated assault and disorder, and arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Two were released on bail, and the other two are being held in custody.
