The Salvation Army's annual "Party in the Carpark" drew an estimated 700 people to Northeast Valley.
It included free food, live music, fire engine rides, ambulance and fire service displays, a police dog and handler, bouncy castles, chocolate fish angling, colouring competitions, face-painting, balloon sculpting and a magic show.
"You don't get much for free these days, but that's what today is all about," Salvation Army Gardens centre leader Nolan Hill said.
"We're blessed to have what we've got and we want to share it with everyone in the community.
"It's a day the whole community gets involved.
"Together, when we combine and everyone links together and does their bit, we can make this community special."
All the food was donated by businesses and the day was organised by volunteers.
It was the fifth year the Salvation Army had organised the event, Mr Hill said.
"It's a good way to make us all think about making a better community together.
"A good community is about being generous. That's why we do it."
