April Henderson, of Calton Hill, told the Otago Daily Times she was traumatised after waking up to find a woman in her mid-20s watching her family sleep earlier this month.
The family questioned why police had not charged the woman and criticised police for their lack of communication.
On Sunday morning, Miss Henderson posted on social media about a visit by a police officer on Saturday night.
‘‘He was very apologetic and acknowledged there had been a communication issue within the system that needs to be addressed.
‘‘Long story short, the woman isn't getting charged and we are happy with the reasons as to why.
‘‘All we wanted was some information and that has now been addressed and by going to the media it has highlighted a serious communication issue higher up in the chain that will now be looked into.''
Dunedin area commander Inspector Jason Guthrie said after he became aware of the family's concerns, he visited to provide an update and answer their queries.
‘‘The communication on this occasion did not meet our normally high standard, so I have personally visited the family to allay any concerns and have offered my apologies for the lack of timely follow-up from police in this matter.
