A new versatile learning area is the focus of fundraising at Waihola District School, with its sixth annual plant fair tomorrow.
Board of trustees chairman Mark Davie said the school, which has between 30 and 40 pupils, was looking to create a ''modern learning environment'' between its two classrooms.
''We're trying to make it more efficient, creating a versatile space for both teachers and students ... It's only in the early stages.''
Mr Davie hoped plans would soon be drawn up, with a budget of about $150,000.
Those involved with planning had looked at the shared learning spaces of several Dunedin schools for ideas.
School PTA president Danique Girvan said the area would house all of the ''impressive technology'' that the school already had, with creative learning stations situated around the area for children to ''extend their learning in creative and imaginative ways''.
Mrs Girvan said the group aimed to provide furnishings for the area along with an interactive challenging fitness track to be developed around the perimeter of the school grounds, to coincide with the refurbished school.
To help this goal, the PTA is running its sixth annual plant fair in the township tomorrow.
The fair was a great opportunity for people to stock up on plants for their gardens, she said.
In addition to plants, baking and raffles, local designers/manufacturers will be selling their garden-related items.
''To organise and create the fair it takes such a huge amount of time and effort from our small team of parents at the school and we have amazing support from our local community who provide and grow plants for us ...
''[We] are aiming high this year as there are some creative and wonderful things that are going to happen to Waihola District School in the future.''
Waihola Plant Fair, tomorrow, 9am to 1pm, Waihola Community Hall.
