Long after its transition from motorway to main street, Main South Rd in Fairfield is set for a face-lift in a planned beautification project.
In conjunction with the establishment of the Southern Motorway, a general development concept plan was drawn up by the Dunedin City Council.
However, funding became an issue and the plan was not implemented - until now.
About $56,000 was now available for progress to be made, council landscape architect Barry Knox said.
The Saddle Hill Community Board believed a good area to start with would be at the pedestrian crossing in front of Fairfield School.
Following consultation with immediately affected neighbours, Mr Knox has drawn up a plan.
Some of the issues in the project include safety of pedestrians, traffic flow, property access and cyclists.
A key intention is to introduce planting, which will make it a more pleasant environment.
Gravel areas near the crossing will be replaced with plants and paving, and a proper bus stop established to one side. ellie.constantine@odt.co.nz
