It was definitely not Lorna Watts’ first Parkrun at the weekend.

The Dunedin 9-year-old notched up her 50th on Saturday at the Dunedin Parkrun at Dunedin Botanic Garden.

It was cold on Saturday morning, Lorna said, and although she typically talked with her father Darren Watts on the run about how the week went, this week she was quiet as she did the 5km loop because she was "really tired".

"Each run I feel like, at the start I don’t want to do it and then once it’s done I feel good."

Even though Saturday’s run was only "sort of" fun and she was only "sort of" proud of reaching 50 Parkruns, Lorna said she was looking forward to dinner on Saturday night when she would mark the milestone with a celebratory dinner of Hawaiian pizza.

Mr Watts said Lorna started doing Parkruns when she was 5 years old.

About 45 of her runs had been in Dunedin, but Lorna had also run at Wanaka, Balclutha, Auckland and Whangarei.

Running with his daughter provided valuable one-on-one time, he said.

"She gets dragged along to everything."

This weekend’s run director Rachael Masterton said if Lorna was tired at the weekend and had to walk the infamous "stairs of despair" as she said, that was fine.

"They can run or they can walk, it’s not a race," she said.

"Hey, I always have to walk the stairs of despair."

She said 136 people crossed the finish line at the weekend and the atmosphere had been really positive.

Parkruns are free and are hosted in 27 countries around the world.

There are 36 Parkrun routes run around New Zealand, including Dunedin’s.
