Pipe band contest venue options

The search is on for an alternative venue for Dunedin's annual pipe band tournament.

New venues will be considered at the next meeting of the Otago Centre of the Royal New Zealand Pipe Bands Association on March 16.

For years, the Otago Centre has hosted two consecutive days of competition within the Octagon, but a few retailers complained to the Dunedin City Council about associated disruption.

No decision has been made about whether one or both of the contest days must be staged at a different venue, although the DCC has indicated some sort of compromise is needed.

Otago Centre president Brian Coutts said there was no rush to find an alternative venue but a few options were available for members' consideration.

The group would first consult the council to determine whether the Octagon had to be ruled out as a venue for both competition days.

Members of the Mosgiel Taieri Community Board and Mosgiel Business Association were keen to see the event shift to Mosgiel.

Mr Coutts said he had also received a call from the manager of the Forsyth Barr Stadium about its use as a venue. The market reserve, Oval, and University Oval were also options.
