A pilot project aimed at bringing the great outdoors to your iPhone is being developed by the University of Otago's design for innovation department.

Third-year students have developed six smartphone applications, or apps, after field trips to the Arthurs Pass National Park Visitor Centre.

The apps would be made available in Apple's App Store in the next six months, and could be adapted nationally for the Department of Conservation, applied science senior teaching fellow Grant Baxter said.

"If the Department of Conservation sees potential in it, it will definitely have legs," he said.

Apps created by the 24 students include a bird identifier, an activities finder, and a scavenger hunt for children visiting the Arthurs Pass area.

The apps and games created by students would also be made available on three iPads at the visitor centre, he said.
