Pile-up ends in assault

A three car pile-up ended in a road rage assault at a set of Dunedin traffic lights.

Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin, said police were called to Crawford St at 7.45am on Monday after a teenager allegedly rear-ended a vehicle before his own vehicle was rear-ended.

A 43-year-old driver had turned off Police St into Crawford St, joining a queue of the cars waiting at the red light, when an 18-year-old allegedly drove into the back of his car. The teenager’s 17-year-old girlfriend then allegedly rear-ended his vehicle.

The 18-year-old then confronted the other driver and slapped him, Sgt Lee said.

All vehicles were able to be driven from the scene. Police inquiries are continuing.
