Emotional charity hospital milestone for family

Can she build it? Yes she can.

Melissa Vining and her two daughters laid the last three bricks at the Southern Charity Hospital yesterday.

The three personal bricks placed by Mrs Vining and her family in honour of the late Blair Vining had special messages inscribed.

Mrs Vining’s message read "Bucket List, Love you Blair", Della-May’s read "1 Man 1 Dream 1 Epic Community" while Lilly’s one displayed "Blair Vining Our Dad Our Hero".

Laying the final bricks was a tearful moment for eldest daughter Della-May, 21.

"I’m just so proud of my mum for making Dad’s wish come true", she said."

The Vinings’ youngest daughter Lilly, 17, was only about 11 when her father was diagnosed with cancer and the plans for the hospital were put into place.

"Dad would be happy about this and Mum has done so well", Lilly said.

Mr Vining campaigned for more equitable cancer treatment in the South after he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bowel cancer in 2018.

Mrs Vining founded the Southern Charity Hospital with help from the Southland community to ensure that people who were missing out on colonoscopy care could get access to it.

"It has been an emotional five-year journey but I’m glad that we were able to tick this off Blair’s bucket list.

"I am so grateful to the community for all their help in getting the hospital built.

"Now more people can get help and more lives will be saved", she said.

Brick donors have been invited to a special Red, Black and White Day where the general public are encouraged to dress in one of three colours to support the Southern Charity Hospital and make a donation for the mufti-day event.

Schools and businesses are invited to book a time to visit the Southern Charity Hospital to find their bricks.

An online booking system on the Southern Charity Hospital website will enable the public to book their timeslot to come and visit the hospital and find their brick.

The building is set to open next month and its first patients are expected in November.
