A firefighter rescued a budgie from a house fire in Dunedin yesterday.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said crews from St Kilda and Lookout Point were deployed about noon to reports of a fire in a house in Barnes Dr, Caversham.

They extinguished the fire and rescued a husky, a Labrador and a budgerigar before ventilating the smoke-logged rental property.

It initially appeared an item on the stove may have caught fire.

A fire investigator and police were at the scene yesterday.
