Sergeant Kevin Davidson, of Mosgiel, said an accelerant, believed to be petrol, was used to start the suspicious fire in the playground at Mosgiel Memorial Park about 11pm on Monday.
The arson caused about $40,000 of damage to the playground and melted sections of both slides, forcing its closure for months. Anyone with information on the fire or who saw any suspicious behaviour should contact police.
