Parking spots could be reduced by 28 under proposal

Scores of car parks in residential South Dunedin could be scrapped to make changes to bus stops in the suburb.

The Dunedin City Council will consider a raft of changes to parking across the city after a proposal for change was backed by the council’s regulatory subcommittee yesterday.

Committee chairman Andrew Whiley said it was important to note the proposal was not related to the contentious issue of parking in the central business district.

But to support creating no-stopping lines for entry and exit ways for existing bus stops and to support the creation of new bus stops, 40 unrestricted parking spots would be lost, Cr Whiley said.

There would be added car parks in some areas and decreased parking elsewhere, he said.

In total, 28 car parks would be lost across the city.

There would be 11 additional P5 parks and 18 additional pay and display or P120 spots among the 44 additional car parks.

There would be 72 car parks removed.

The parking changes in the proposal endorsed yesterday were a result of unsolicited requests to the council, and the Otago Regional Council, bus drivers and bus companies were behind the bulk of the changes, Cr Whiley said.

Meanwhile, the subcommittee also recommended councillors make part of Ward St near the overbridge one-way to make the area safer and formalise about 15 ad hoc car parks in the area into 35 new unrestricted angle parks.
